| Alpha lipoic acid (ALA), also called thioctic acid, is a relatively newly-discovered nutrient first isolated in the 1950’s, that is showing potential for maintaining healthy ageing. First thought to be a vitamin, it was later found to be made in the body, although exactly how is not yet known. It is a fatty acid that contains the mineral sulphur and assists in making energy in body cells.
Powerful antioxidant protection
According to one researcher, ALA is “probably the most potent naturally occurring antioxidant known to man.”1 ALA has a special role as a ‘super’ or ‘universal’ antioxidant that protects the body from free radicals because, unlike other antioxidants, it acts in both the watery and fatty compartments of our cells and it also helps regenerate other vital antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and coenzyme Q10. ALA can also bind to metals such as copper, iron and cadmium and stop them from reacting with oxygen to generate free radicals that can damage cell structures.
Healthy ageing
One of the key theories about why we age is that free radical damage accumulates in cells. This causes cell membranes to break down and eventually lose function. ALA has potential for reducing free radical damage and may be able to assist healthy ageing. Take a look at Golden Glow's Alpha Lipoic Acid.
Protects brain and nerves
Researchers have suggested that ALA may be useful for maintaining brain function as we age because it reduces inflammation, increases transmission of nerve messages and scavenges free radicals that build up in brain tissue.2
