Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. The joints are where two bones meet, and to allow easy movement in our movable joints, the bone ends must have smooth cartilage surfaces that are cushioning and they are well lubricated to minimise friction.

Arthritis is the major cause of disability and chronic pain in Australia, with 3.85 million Australians affected.1 Symptoms of arthritis can include pain, swelling, stiffness or reduced movement and joint deformity.

There are many different forms of arthritis, some of them affecting young people and children. One of the most common forms is osteoarthritis, which is the wear and tear arthritis that gets more common as we get older. In this form of arthritis, the cartilage wears away, so that it may no longer protect the bone, which can then become damaged. Rheumatoid arthritis is another type of arthritis, and is related to immune system problems.
